2010 is full of all sorts of surprises and also lot of things we have seen before. Remakes, sequels, clones and well a couple original ideas. In this series, I will take a brief look at the movies coming this year. It will be split up month-to-month with my top three picks per month that will be must-sees.
SPRING MOVIE SEASON
My picks for March start with the reimagining of the classic fairy tale ALICE IN WONDERLAND by Tim Burton and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Tim Burton was born to turn that classic into movie. (debuts March 5.)
On March 12, GREEN ZONE reunites Matt Damon with his Bourne director Paul Greengrass. The action thriller features Damon as a Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller and an army of inspectors who are dispatched to Baghdad in 2003 to uncover weapons of mass destruction. The movie’s twists and turns lead the team straight into a cover up and what could be a release of chemical weapons. The movie looks like Bourne 4. With the curse of movies about the Iraq War still relevant it will be interesting to see if talent such as Damon and Greengrass can prevail. (debuts March 12)
Finally for March we have CLASH OF THE TITANS. This is a remake of the Ray Harryhausen classic based on Greek Mythology. Where hero Perseus defends mankind against the wrath of the Gods. The ultimate weapon the Gods have is the all-mighty Kraken and there is only one way to stop it. Perseus journeys the four corners of the globe in search of a way to stop the Kraken. Can Perseus save mankind and the woman he loves? The movie stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Danny Huston and Alexa Davalos.(Opens March 26)
April will see the debut of two graphic novel adaptions, the return of a horror titan, a very unnecessary sequel and a sling of comedies. But I can only pick three so I went with my most anticipated for April.
What if superheroes existed in the real world? Not all superheroes have superpowers so it would be possible, right? That is what teen Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) thinks so he dresses up as superhero Kick Ass to try to make a difference. KICK ASS looks to be a surprise and could be a 2010 shocker. The movie co-stars Nicolas Cage & Christopher Mintz-Plasse. (Opens April 16)
THE LOSERS centers on a Special Forces unit sent to Bolivia on a search and destroy mission. They are betrayed from within so they fakes their own deaths to find the traitor. The movie stars Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jason Patric, Jeremy Renner and Idris Elba. (Opens April 9)
For my next pick I just have to see it for curiosity sake. Jackie Earl Haley (Watchmen, Little Children) takes on the classic role of Freddy Krueger, the child murderer of Elm Street. This remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET looks like it has the Texas Chainsaw makeover and is more focused on the origins of Freddy. The movie co-stars Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Connie Britton and Kyle Gallner. (Opens April 30)
Look for May & June tomorrow and the rest of the series in the coming months.
