In his first three years working in Hollywood, John Cusack starred in ten films. Most of them were really enduring comedies that showed Cusack’s slapstick comedy ability and established him as the unlikely hero he still plays to this day.
Within those three years, Cusack starred in 80s comedy classics like “The Sure Thing”, “Better Off Dead” and “One Crazy Summer”. He also played key roles in movies like “Sixteen Candles” and “Stand By Me”.
“Better Off Dead” is one of Cusack’s greatest early movies. It was his first riotous comedy and his first time teaming with director Savage Steve Holland. The movie also marks the directorial debut of Steve Holland.
The slapstick hi-jinx of this movie make it still funny today as it was back then. The psychotic paperboy wanting his $2. His mom’s bizarro cooking. His invention creating little brother. And all the zany characters that Holland throws into this film make it very memorable. If you love John Cusack comedies which are 80s underground faves then you have to check out this gem.
