“Total Recall” set a lot of records back in 1990. It was the seventh highest movie of that year. Schwarzenegger’s fifth high-grossing movie to date and the third best film of his career (only second to the first two Terminator films).
Total Recall is directed by Paul Verhoeven (Robocop) who delivered a highly-paced action comedy with lots of humor and thrills. Much of the humor in the movie is in the same tone as his previous film Robocop.
It is based on a Phillip K Dick short story about Douglas Quaid, an average guy who wants a more exciting life.
So he goes to this company that will install exciting memories in your mind for a mild fee. Quaid wants an adventure on Mars as a secret agent.
But when the company goes to put in the implants they realize that Quaid’s mind had already been erased and their procedure had awoken a new side of Douglas Quaid.
Hunted by the government, Quaid has to straighten out the secrets buried within his head and the solve the mystery of himself.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was never the greatest actor. He always looked amazing holding a gun, fighting bad guys and delivering his trademark one-liners.
It was the talent that Schwarzenegger put himself with that really stabilized his rise to fame so quickly. James Cameron, Paul Verhoeven, Ivan Reitman, John Millius and John McTiernan all had a key role in the evolution of the 80s greatest action star.
Other changes I would have made would be switching Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin. Give Michael Ironside more screentime. And have Paul Verhoeven do an extended cut for the Blu-Ray. Seeing alternate cuts for this movie would be a lot of fun.
The 1990 version of Total Recall has become an action classic because of the production design, humor and very creative key scenes. Some great one-liners from Schwarzenegger, such as “Consider that a Divorce!” or “Get Your Ass to Mars”, always bring smiles to action stars.
It is a wild thrill ride for any action fan.
