What exactly is “666 Park Avenue”? Does it want to be a soap in a ritzy New York condo complex with mysteries? Does it want to be a full blown horror show? Does it want to be a genre show? I can’t really decide what the vibe of this series is going to be by the pilot.
Rachael Taylor (Transformers) and Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters) star as Jane and Henry, a couple who answer an add on Craigslist to manage a luxurious Park Avenue condo building, The Drake.
The building is owned by Gavin and Olivia Doran (Terry O’Quinn & Vanessa Williams), who bought the building back in the 1980s and have gotten rich off it’s skyrocketing value. Now they are planning some renovations.
There are a lot of intertwining mysteries with the tenants of the Drake. There is a peeping tom playwright, a girl who can see the future, a guy who has to kill to keep his wife alive and the very innocent managers.
They are all connected by something sinister and it leads back to Gavin Doran.
So is Terry O’Quinn Satan in this show? Doubtful, my hunch is he is just the messenger. Many critics have called this show a rip-off of “The Devil’s Advocate” starring Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron.
Yes there are some evidence but you also have to remember they were lawyers and well people seem to forget just how awful the ending was to that movie.
This series has shades of the 80’s show “Hotel” which was a soap set in a luxurious hotel starring James Brolin and Connie Sellecca. Imagine if that series had supernatural undertones and well Brolin was a demon.
We are getting closer to this series. Now add in the FX hit “American Horror Story” and movies like “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”, “Rear Window” and “Body Double” then there is this series.
What will keep bringing me back to see if the show finally finds it feet is I really like stars Rachael Taylor and Terry O’Quinn. Taylor is a very likeable and steady female lead and if the show focuses more on her and the mystery surrounding the Drake then the show has promise.
O’Quinn knows this character inside and out. He played a man with questionable morals for years on “Lost”, “Falling Skies” and going all the way back to “Millennium” and “Harsh Realm”. He is a brilliant actor and does have the fibre to bring a show like this back on track. But just how much do the show creators want to reveal about O’Quinn this early on and will that hinder O’Quinn’s performance?
Will it last in this time period? No. Following ABC’s new hits “Once Upon a Time” and “Revenge” is a tall act to follow. There has been some chatter online about why not flipping 666 and Last Resort. I have to agree both series are on the wrong nights.
The show has plenty of potential. But with an unproven creator in David Wilcox at the helm, the question that Hollywood has to be asking is does he have something planned and when is he going to drop the hook?
