Walt Disney Animation takes a page from their own Pixar as they bring a child’s toy to life. This time it is videogames as a down-on-his-luck bad guy, Wreck-It Ralph (John C Reilly) tries to gain the respect of his fellow game characters by jumping games so he can win a respectable gold medal.
I liked John C. Reilly’s voice of this big dumb bad guy and how he learns what a hero is supposed to be. The animation and exploration of how a character from one game acts in another is so much fun. I just wanted more.
The concept of the movie reminded me of the 1992 underrated comedy gem “Stay Tuned”, where a couple are pulled into their television and are stuck jumping from one channel to the next. But in “Wreck-It Ralph”, he only journeys to two game lands, “Hero’s Duty” and “Sugar Rush”. That was really my only quip about the film was it barely scratched the surface of what the kind of plot could include. There could be a TV series or sequel here if they wanted.
